UNHCR and Global Appeals and Reports Section
UNHCR\\xe2\\x80\\x99s Global Appeals and Reports Section is the penholder to UNHCR\\xe2\\x80\\x99s two major publications \\xe2\\x80\\x93 the Global Appeal and Global Report, and also produces/co-produces other reports and supplementary appeals. It also manages the Global Focus website, which is the main operational reporting website for donors and other key partners. The Global Appeal is the primary fundraising tool for UNHCR to present its needs and funding requirements to its donors for the year to come in order to protect and improve the lives of tens of millions of people under its mandate \\xe2\\x80\\x93 refugees, returnees, internally displaced people, stateless persons, and others of concern. The Global report highlights the year\\xe2\\x80\\x99s achievements, as well as challenges faced by the organization and its partners, in attempting to respond to multiple life-threatening crises and ever-growing humanitarian needs. The Section is working within the Division of External Relations and is in contact with all the Regional offices in the field and all the Divisions based in headquarters to produce these main publications.
The position
The Global Appeal and the Global Report publications are published in both English and French language. The French versions need to be ready for printing within 1 month and half after their English version is released. Therefore, the Global Appeals and Reports Section is looking for a dynamic intern who will be able to assist the coordinator of the French versions to produce the publication of the Global Appeal 2024 in French, by reviewing the texts translated externally, editing them to reach a fluid translation but also faithful to the original English version. The intern will also assist in directly translating the financial tables and infographic elements of the printed publication into French. The ideal post-holder will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, have high level written skills in French and in English and the ability to work independently but also in close collaboration with the French coordinator who will guide him/her.
Key responsibilities will include:
1) Participate to the editing process of all the French translations done externally in Word for the Global Report 2022 print publication meaning:
Ensure all texts have been translated.
Use appropriate, readable and user-friendly language and eventually change the structure of sentences if needed in order to reach a smooth and fluid French translation, while remaining faithful to the original English version.
Proofread the texts to avoid repetition, check grammar, syntax, punctuation and style.
Verify the different expressions/acronyms/references to ensure consistency throughout the document using UN terminology and UNHCR usual French terminology used in previous reports.
Check country names in French are the UN official ones in texts, tables and maps.
Insert French acronyms only when existing in UNTERM and in consistency with previous appeals and reports.
Check and research if hyperlinks to documents inserted in the English version exist in French version and replace as necessary.
Translate as required financial tables in Excel and other infographics and ensure use of French format for all the figures.
2) Participate in the quality control process during the layout of the French printed version and ensure the layout is duplicating the English version as much as possible :
verify all the visual elements are inserted and the right ones (icons, margin highlights, titles, subtitles, photo captions and credits, maps, text boxes, pagination, font size, type and color) and that their position and format are correct;
participate to the proofreading of the different versions in PDF, inserting clear instructions on corrections to the Designer including for the final proofreading on hardcopies. This includes travel to the office of the printing company in charge of the layout and based in Geneva.
3) Any other responsibilities/functions deemed necessary or as delegated by the Chief of the Global Appeals and Reports Section.
Essential minimum qualifications and professional experience required In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and
Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization.
NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
Other qualifications
The candidate must be interested in refugee and migrant issues and with external relation work and be familiar with UNHCR\\xe2\\x80\\x99s work and other humanitarian and development actors.
Good knowledge of Word and Excel software.

The successful candidate will be based with the team in the Geneva Headquarters, Switzerland. Considering the work to be done in close collaboration with the French Coordinator and in particular the proofreading of the hard copies, the successful candidate will work from home but also in the office in Geneva to better benefit from the team\\xe2\\x80\\x99s knowledge and interact rapidly with her/his supervisor. In this respect, we would have a preference for recruiting someone who is already living and potentially studying in Geneva or around, to limit travel. Conditions The internship is for two months and the start date is 1 November 2023 and the end date is 31 December 2023. It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm. Allowance: Interns based in Geneva who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive a monthly allowance to help cover their costs of food, local transportation and living expenses.
