The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC, ), to become a National Research Infrastructure in 2025, has offices at EPFL, ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Its mandate is to help academic researchers and the industry leverage key data science technologies, and among them state-of-the-art machine learning & AI. The different teams of the SDSC provide a broad range of expertise in Data Science, Data Engineering, ORD, etc. Its Applied AI/ML/DS Research team counts more than 40 PhDs in machine learning & AI, statistics, signal processing, computer vision, NLP, etc.
Deputy Chief Data Scientist
Your mission :
The Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC) is looking to hire a Deputy Chief Data Scientist in its Lausanne office, on the EPFL campus, with a strong research profile in machine learning and significant experience of team and interdisciplinary research project coordination.
The Deputy Chief Data Scientist (DCDS) co-leads the Applied AI/ML/DS Research team, working on collaborative applied research projects with academic researchers from all Swiss Higher Education Institutions, (see for information on some of our academic research collaborations). The DCDS contributes furthermore to the development of larger initiatives of the research infrastructure in strategic areas such as AI for Health and Biomedical research, AI for Energy, Climate and Environment, and AI for Science, aiming at strong societal impact.
Main duties and responsibilities include :
The DCDS works closely with the Chief Data Scientist to structure the research activity of the team and the collaborations of the team with various partners.
He/she is co-responsible for the definition and responsible for the development of the offer of research-level services of the SDSC in strategic research areas, and/or based on certain AI/ML techniques.
The DCDS coordinates a number of collaborative projects and supports other senior members of the team with project coordination responsibilities.
The DCDS contributes to overseeing the technical work of the team, from state-of-the-art AI/ML model design and implementation to scientific analyses and helps identify solutions and overcome technical difficulties.
He/she is co-responsible for the development of the collective expertise of the team in strategic areas and assumes responsibilities for hiring and management of scientific personnel.
The DCDS works closely with the Chief Data Scientist and the Executive Director to define the strategy of development of the SDSC as a research infrastructure.
He/she plays a key role in the definition and management of SDSC research calls and of associated review processes, research collaborations, grants and partnerships, and scientific workshop organization.
Your profile :
The ideal candidate has :
solid and broad technical expertise in machine learning research,
experience of at least 6 years of research in an academic environment after the doctorate
clear team and interdisciplinary research project management experience
clear experience in defining and conducting applied research projects in data science, machine learning, AI, computer vision or related field
